Abstract

TÜRKÇE ÖZET MEHMET İZZET: BİYOGRAFİSİ, SOSYOLOJİSİ, MİLLİYETÇİLİĞİ Rahşan Koç Sosyoloji Yüksek Lisans Tezi Danışman: Prof. Dr. Beşir Atalay Eylül, 1996 Ülkemizdeki sosyolojik çalışmalara göz attığımızda sosyolojinin bizim için ne kadar yeni olduğunu anlıyoruz. Türk toplumunu açıklamaya yönelik çalışmalar II Meşrutiyetin ilk yıllarında karşımıza çıkmakla beraber, bu çalışmalar genellikle Fransadaki ünlü sosyologların görüşlerini yayınladıkları kitap ve makalelerin Osmanlıca ya çevrilmesiyle sınırlıydı. Bilindiği gibi o yıllardaki temel sosyolojik sorun "Cemiyet-i Beşeriye Nasıl Muhafaza-i Hayat Eder"1 idi. Bu sorun ışığında birçok düşünürümüz sosyolojik görüş ve düşüncelerini ortaya koymuşlardı ki, bunlar arasında Ahmet Şuayip, Mehmet Cevdet, Rıza Tevfik gibi düşünürlerimizi saymak mümkündür. Auguste Comte, Durkheim ve Le Play etkisinde gelişen Türk sosyolojisi kendi kimliğini kazanabilmek ve Osmanlı toplumuna yön verebilmek çabasındaydı. Bu uğurda yukarıda zikredilen isimlerin dışında Türk sosyolojisine imzasını atan önemli düşünürlerimiz de vardı kuşkusuz. Ancak bu çalışma bir "master" tezi olarak planlandığından Türk Sosyolojisine önemli katkıların sadece küçücük bir parçasıyla ilgilenmek zorunda kalınmaktadır. Bu nedenle araştırma Türk sosyologlarından Mehmet İzzet ile sınırlandırılmıştır. Mehmet İzzet'in sosyolojik, felsefi görüş ve düşüncelerinin tanıtılması Türk Sosyoloji Geleneği" oluşturmak bakımından önem taşımaktadır. İzzet çağdaş bir düşünürümüzdür ve Türk inkılaplarından oldukça etkilenmiştir. Sosyolojik anlamda bu inkılapların gerekliliğini, 1 Emre Kongar, Türk Toplum Bilimcileri, Remzi Kitabevi, İstanbul,-! 982. S.15. IIIsonuçlarını, inkılaplarla birlikte değişen sosyal, kültürel değerleri bilimsel anlamda açıklamaya çalışmıştır. Bu değerlerin toplum tarafından ortak değerler olarak benimsenmesinin ne denli önemli olduğu üzerinde durmuştur. Mehmet İzzet adının Türk sosyoloji tarihinde sıklıkla telaffuz edilmemesi genç yaştaki vefatına bağlanabilir. Henüz 39 yaşındayken kaybettiğimiz İzzet kısacık hayatına rağmen geriye birçok eser bırakmayı başarmıştır. Bunlar arasında liseler için hazırlanan İçtimaiyat adlı eseri, milliyet ve milli hayat kavramlarını tartıştığı Milliyet Nazariyeleri ve Milli Hayat adlı eseri ve 60 a yakın makalesi önemli yer tutar. iv

A. in Sociology Advisor: Prof. Dr. Beşir Atalay September, 1996 When we investigate the sociological works in our country, we realise that the science of sociology is new for us. Although the research carried out to explain Turkish society go back to the first years of the second Meşrutiyet, these studies would usually consist of the translations of famous French sociologists' essays and books into the Ottoman language. As known, in those years the major sociological dispute was over how human society would preserve its integrity in order to survive. Concerning this dispute, many Turkish thinkers, among whom are the names like Ahmet Suayip, Mehmet Cevdet, Riza Tevfik, communicated their sociological views. Turkish sociology, which developed under the influence of Auguste Comte, Durkheim, and Le Play, was trying to define Ottoman society, and in this way, acquire its own identity. There were, of course, some other names who made important contributions to Turkish sociology, but since this research is intended as a "master dissertation" only a small portion of these contributions will be dealt with. Therefore, the research is limited to one Turkish sociologist, Mehmet İzzet. An introductory analysis of the sociological and philosophical views of Mehmet İzzet will be vital if we are to posit the existence of a tradition of "Turkish Sociology". İzzet was one of the most innovative thinkers of his age and was influenced by the Turkish Kemalist "cultural revolution". Heexplains, in his works, the necessity of such revolutions; he examines changing socio-cultural attitudes in a scientific way. Furthermore, he emphasises the importance of acceptance of such new values into a society with commonly shared values. The fact that Mehmet Izzet's name is not frequently acknowledged in the history of Turkish Sociology can be explained by his death at a very young age. Despite his death at the age of 39, he left behind many works. Among these are İçtimaiyat, a book he wrote for high schools; Milliyet Nazariyeleri ve Milli Hayat, another book in which he discusses the concepts like nationality and national life, and approximately 60 essays.
