The Perception Of Nursing By First-Year Nursing Students: A Metaphor Analysis

Abstract

This study was done with the objective of revealingthrough metaphors the perceptions of first-year nursingstudents on the concept of “nursing”. This study wasrealized with the voluntary participation of 80 first yearstudents of the Department of Nursing at the School ofHealth Sciences of a university and who accepted toparticipate in the study. It was requested that everynursing student should complete the sentence, “Nursingis like..., because...” with the objective of revealing theirmetaphors for the concept of “nursing”. It was foundthat nursing students produced 45 different metaphors.The metaphors constituted for the concept of “nursing”by the nursing students were treated in seven categories.It was determined that the categories in which thestudents produced the most metaphors were mother, toassist, life, to be responsible, physician’s assistant, cornerstoneand a difficult profession. In conclusion, themetaphors can be used as a strong research tool in understanding,revealing and explaining the cognitiveimages of the nursing student about the concept ofnursing. There is a need to study the concept of nursingthrough metaphors in different year students andnurses.

Bu araştırma hemşirelik birinci sınıf öğrencilerin,“hemşirelik” kavramına ilişkin sahip oldukları algılarımetaforlar aracılığıyla ortaya çıkarmak amacıyla yapılmıştır.Bu araştırma, bir üniversitenin Sağlık BilimleriFakültesi Hemşirelik Bölümü 1.sınıfta öğrenim gören vearaştırmaya katılmaya kabul eden 80 öğrencinin katılımıylagerçekleştirilmiştir. Her bir hemşirelik öğrencisine“hemşirelik” kavramına ilişkin sahip oldukları metaforlarıortaya çıkarmak amacıyla “Hemşirelik . . gibidir;çünkü . . .” cümlesini tamamlaması istenmiştir. Hemşireliköğrencilerinin 45 değişik metafor ürettikleri bulunmuştur.Hemşirelik öğrencilerinin “hemşirelik” kavramınailişkin oluşturdukları metaforlar yedi kategorideele alınmıştır. Öğrencilerin en çok metafor ürettiklerikategorilerin; anne, yardım etmek, hayat, sorumluluksahibi olmak, doktor yardımcısı, temel taş, zor bir meslekolduğu belirlenmiştir. Sonuç olarak, metaforlar,hemşirelik öğrencilerinin hemşirelik ile ilgili kavramsalimgeleri açıklamada güçlü bir araştırma aracı olarakkullanılabilir. Hemşirelik kavramının farklı sınıf öğrencilerdeve hemşirelerde metaforlar aracılığıyla araştırılmasınagereksinim vardır.
