The principles of minimized cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) systems, which were developed to significantly reduce hemodilution of the patient as well as having additional anti-inflammatory features, are described. Aspects of the design of a minimized circuit program are outlined, including good planning, cross-discipline work and co-operation among surgeon, anesthesiologist, nurse and perfusionists. Mini-CPB systems are described - these are modular and portable extracorporeal circuits that can be used anywhere including during patient transport. © 2012 Woodhead Publishing Limited.
