Prof. Dr.+DVDQ1XU7(67(5(&øJune 2005, 69 pagesIn this work, furfuryl alcohol (FA) was polymerized electrochemically indifferent solvent-electrolyt couples via constant potential electrolysis (CPE) andconstant current electrolysis (CCE). Moreover, the factors effecting thepolymerization such as solvent, potential and temperature were examined.In this study, cyclic voltametry (CV) of FA an oxidation peak was obtained at1650 mV. It was observed that a diffusion controlled electron transfer at 1650 mVfollowed by a chemical reaction according to Nicholson-Shain criteria.In CPE study, grafit (C) electrode was used as a working electrode and it wasobtained 41% conversion values as the temperature increases. The catalyst SnCl4 hada positive effect on percent conversion. The product had a little solubility in commonorganic solvent, but the soluble parts became insoluble upon standing.The effect of temperature, solvent, electrode and electrolyt was studied as afunction of percent conversion by CCE. It is found that as the current intensityincreases, the percent conversion arrives to 95%. The products were insoluble incommon organic solvents.The structural analyses of the products were performed bye FT-IR, NMRspectroscopy. The studies revealed that although the ring rupture of FA during thepolymerization, as given in literature, the main product polyfurfuryl alcohol, joinedbye methylene bridges which is the auto-condensation product. It was observed thepolymers consist of tetramers by a theoretical calculation depending upon the NMRsignals. The polymer Tg was about 125oC.
