Effects of epidural bupivacaine, bupivacaine-butorphanol and bupivacaine-morphine on postoperative analgesia for hind limb and pelvic orthopedic operations in dogs [Köpeklerde arka ekstremite ve pelvisin ortopedik operasyonlarında epidural bupivakain, bupivakain-butorfanol ve bupivakain-morfin uygulamasının postoperatif analjezi üzerine etkisi]
(Chartered Inst. of Building Services Engineers, 2021) Karsli B.; Pekcan Z.; Kumandaş A.; Kürüm B.; Çinar M.
The aim of this study was to compare the postoperative analgesic effects of epidural bupivacaine, bupivacaine-butorphanol and bupivacaine-morphine in hind limb and pelvic orthopedic operations in dogs. Three groups each containing 10 dogs were formed. Through the lumbosacral space, group B was administered bupivacaine, 1 mg kg-1; group BB was administered bupivacaine, 1 mg kg-1 and butorphanol, 0.25 mg kg-1; and group BM was administered bupivacaine, 1 mg kg-1 and morphine, 0.1 mg kg-1. Anaesthesia was induced with diazepam (0.2 mg kg-1) and propofol (5 mg kg-1) and maintenance with isoflurane in oxygen. Pain assessment was performed with the University of Melbourne Pain Scale (UMPS) by a blinded observer. Plasma cortisol levels were measured preoperatively and postoperatively. Postoperative pain scores were significantly lower at 2 hours in the group BM, and at 8 and 12 hours in the groups BB and BM compared to the group B (P=0.007). Group BM had a lower plasma cortisol level than the group B at 2 hours (P=0.002). Bupivacaine-butorphanol and bupivacaine-morphine use were shown to provide longer analgesia in the postoperative period; and the epidural administration of bupivacaine-butorphanol and bupivacaine-morphine was considered to be potentially useful in clinical practice. © 2021, Chartered Inst. of Building Services Engineers. Oxidative stress in akkaraman ewes with seropositive for schmallenberg Virus
    (Ataturk Universitesi, 2018) Macun H.C.; Çinar M.; Azkur A.K.; Kalender H.; Erat S.
The aim of this study was to determine oxidant-antioxidant status by evaluating some oxidative stress parameters (nitric oxide (NO), malondialdehyde (MDA), total antioxidant status (TAS), total oxidant status (TOS), catalase activity) in clinically healthy Akkaraman ewes with seropositive for Schmallenberg virus (SBV). The study consisted of four positive, six suspected and seven negative-control blood sera in terms of specific antibody for SBV by using commercial ELISA kits. Even though there were no significant statistical differences (P>0.05), the highest NO level was in sera with SBV specific antibody positive while the lowest TOS level was in sera with SBV specific antibody negative. The values of TAS in sera were very similar in the groups (P=0.981). While the MDA levels of sera with SBV specific antibody positive and suspected were similar, the statistical difference was found between the MDA level of sera with SBV specific antibody positive and negative (P=0.021). The catalase activity of sera with SBV specific antibody positive was lower (P=0.030) than the catalase activity of sera with SBV suspected whereas the catalase activities in positive and negative groups and the catalase activities in suspected and negative groups were similar. In conclusion, it was determined that MDA level was affected in Akkaraman ewes that are SBV specific antibody positive without clinical symptoms. © 2018 Ataturk Universitesi. All Rights Reserved.

Plasma β-Carotene, Vitamin A and Vitamin C Levels in Cyclic and Pregnant Cows
    (2010) Ataman M.B.; Erdem H.; Bülbül B.; Haliloğlu S.; Çinar M.; Aköz M.
The aim of this study was to determine the plasma ?-carotene, vitamin A and vitamin C levels and correlation between these parameters in cyclic and pregnant dairy cattle. A total of 101 Holstein cows used for this aim. Artificial inseminations (AI) were performed 12 h after determining the oestrus. The cows were allocated to two groups as pregnant (n=81) and nonpregnant (n=20) after the determination of pregnancy. Progesterone level was only higher on day 21 in pregnant cows than that in nonpregnant cows (P<0.05). There were variations in the mean levels of ?-carotene and vitamin A in pregnant and nonpregnant cows (P<0.05) whereas vitamin C levels in nonpregnant cows did not differ during the oestrus cycle. There was a negative correlation between the plasma levels of progesterone and ?-carotene (P<0.01) and progesterone and vitamin A (P<0.05) in pregnant cows, and a positive correlation between the plasma levels of ?-carotene and vitamin A in both pregnant and nonpregnant cows (P<0.01), during the cycle. In conclusion, differences were determined in the levels of ?-carotene, vitamin A and vitamin C in pregnant cows, and b-carotene and vitamin A in nonpregnant cows with the stages of the oestrus cycle in this study. In addition to this, more research is needed evaluating the relationship between these parameters and their effects on bovine reproduction.
