Method: This descriptive study was conducted between January 2011 and May 2011. Study sample was not determined; 195 nurses who agreed to participate were included in the sample. The data were collected using a questionnaire consisting of 27 questions, 4 of which were open-ended. The data were evaluated using descriptive analysis. Results: Among the nurses who participated in the study, 80.4% were female and the mean age was 34.27 +/- 1.19. The basic interventions performed by nurses working in psychiatry clinics were as follows: 76.8% psychopharmacological treatment; 52.6% observation; and 41.8% self-care of patients. The nurses also stated that therapeutic communication, workshop/occupational therapy, group/individual therapy were among the less performed practices instead they used to deal much with paperwork. Conclusion: Almost all nurses included in the study (96.4%) stated that their role and responsibilities are not clear and that they are not included in the laws. According to the study findings, it might be concluded that there is a need to clearly define the role and responsibilities of psychiatric nurses.
