Agency in the emerging adulthood period: An introductory study in Turkey
    (2012) Atak H.; Taştan N.
The term agency has been defined to a sense of responsibility for one's life course, the belief that one is in control of one's decisions about life and is responsible for their outcomes, and the confidence that one will be able to overcome obstacles that impede one's progress along one's chosen life course. In this context, agency has been considered a composite structure which is consisting of self-esteem, purpose in life, self-efficacy, and internal locus of control. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between the agency of emerging adults and certain demographic variables such as college education status, age, gender, SES, working status, marital status, parental status, and monthly total income of the family, self-definition, perceived identity definition, and self-definition about reaching adulthood. In this descriptive study, data were collected 700 emerging adults between the ages 18-26, so cross-sectional research design was used. To measure agency, The Multi-Measure Agentic Personality Scale-Short Form was used. Descriptive statistics were computed for all variables. T-test and One-Way ANOVA were used to determine whether or not demographic variables play a significant role in total point of the scale. The results showed that while there was a significant relationship between agency and certain demographic variables which are self-definition about reaching adulthood, educational status, gender, perceived identity definition, working status, college education status, and self-definition, and there wasn't a significant relationship between agency and certain demographic variables which are age, total income of the family, marital status, SES, and parental status. The findings were discussed in the context of emerging adulthood theory, and culture. © EuroJournals Publishing, Inc. 2012.

Evaluation of the turkish version of the multi-measure agentic personality scale
    (2013) Atak H.; Kapçi E.G.; çok F.
Evaluation of the Turkish Version of the Multi-Measure Agentic Personality Scale Objective: The term agency has been defined as a sense of responsibility for one's life course, the belief that one is in control of one's decisions about life and is responsible for their outcomes and the confidence that one will be able to overcome obstacles that impede one's progress along one's chosen life course. The "Multi- Measure Agentic Personality Scale (MAPS)" was designed to measure agentic personality. The present study aimed to assess the applicability of the MAPS for Turkish youngsters. Methods: Data from a total of 410 participants (male n=188, 45.8%; female n=222, 54.2%) were utilized for validity and reliability analyses. Of the participants, 196 (47.8%) were university students and the rest were not (n=214; 52.2%). The mean age of the participants was 22.5 (SD=1.9) ranging from 19 to 25. Results: Exploratory factor analysis yielded four-factor model explaining 57.43% of the variance. Confirmatory factor analyses (?2/sd=3.11, GFI=0.94, RMSEA=0.05) and second-order factor analyses (?2/sd=3.87, GFI=0.99, RMSEA=0.03) indicated that a four factor solution met the criteria standards for adequacy of fit. The internal consistency and test-retest stability revealed a moderate to high reliabilities. After analyzing the data, 5 items were dropped from the original scale. Discussion and Conclusion: The analyses demonstrated that the Turkish version of MAPS could be used in studies that evaluates agency.

Predictive role of personality traits on internet addiction
    (2012) Çelik S.; Atak H.; Başal A.
Aiming to develop a model seeking to investigate the direct effects of personality types on internet addiction, this study was set and tested on tertiary level students receiving education within two learning modes: face to face and distance education. The participants of the study, selected through maximum variety method within purposive sampling, included 210 students enrolled on face-to-face and distance education programs of computer programming department. In addition to a personal data form aiming to obtain information on demographic features of the participants, a personality inventory and an Internet addiction scale were utilized to gather data. As an analysis model concurrently exerting both the mediation and direct effects, path analysis with observed variables was utilized in the current study to test the developed model. The findings revealed that while the most powerful predictor variable of internet addiction was conscientiousness, openness to experience was found as the weakest independent variable predictor. Additionally the developed model was observed as valid for both face to face and distance education students.

The Turkish adaptation of the ten-item personality inventory
    (2013) Atak H.
Introduction: Personality is one of the important domains of psychology, and it is an integration of emotional, cognitive, social and physical properties. In this study, we aimed to assess the applicability of the "Ten-Item Personality Inventory (TIPI)" which measures five basic personality traits in Turkish young people. Methods: Data from a total of 420 participants-208 male (49.1%) and 212 female (50.9%)-were employed for the validity and reliability analyses. Of the participants, 230 (54, 8%; mean age: 23, 2 years; sd=1, 6) were university students and the rest were not (n=190; 45.2%; mean age: 23.4 years; df=1.7). The mean age of the participants was 22.1 years (df =1.3), ranging from 18 to 25 years. Results: Language validity (correlations between 0.92 and 0.97), exploratory factor analysis yielded 10 items and five-factor model explaining 65.21%of the variance. Confirmatory factor analyses (?2/df: 2.20, GFI=0.95, AGFI=0.92, CFI=0.93, NNFI=0.91, RMR=0.04, and RMSEA=0.03), item analysis, and convergent validity results indicated that a five-factor solution with 10 items met the criteria standards for adequacy of fit among Turkish young people. The internal consistency (Openness to Experiences 0.83, Agreeableness 0.81, Emotional Stability 0.83, Conscientiousness 0.84, and Extraversion 0.86) and test-retest stability (=54; Openness to Experiences 0.89, Agreeableness 0.87, Emotional Stability 0.89, Conscientiousness 0.87, and Extraversion 0.88) revealed a moderate to acceptable reliabilities. Conclusion: The results demonstrated that the TIPI could be used in studies that evaluate personality in Turkish young people. © Archives of Neuropsychiatry, published by Galenos Publishing.
