    A Comparative Study on the Effect of Education on Nursing Students' Oral and Dental Health Awareness

    Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of “Community Oral and Dental Health”\rcourse on the oral and dental health awareness of nursing students from two different faculties.\rMaterials and Methods: 164 nursing students who took “Community Oral and Dental Health”\rcourse at Kırıkkale University and 230 nursing students from Bolu Abant İzzet Baysal University\rwho did not take the same course were subjected to the questionnaire. The questionnaire\rconsisted of multiple choice questions based on oral and dental health awareness. The statistical\ranalysis was performed with Pearson or Fisher’s exact chi square tests.\rResults: Although, there was no statistically significant difference (p>0.05) between the\rmouthwash and dental floss use, there was a statistically significant difference between tooth\rbrushing habits of the students (p<0.05). Also, the groups' awareness of the symptoms and\raffective factors of periodontal diseases did not indicate statistically significant differences (p>0.05).\rThe concept “Children who have dental caries in their mothers are more likely to have it” was better\rknown by the students taking the course (p<0.001). There was a statistically significant difference\rbetween two groups in terms of the cause of dental caries (being infected with caries bacteria at an\rearly age, p=0.001).\rConclusions: The oral and dental health awareness increased among nursing students taking the\r“Community Oral and Dental Health” course. Since, the nurses are potential candidates for public\rhealth education and even oral health assessments, inclusion of this course in the nursing\rcurriculum will increase public awareness and improve oral health.

    Effects of mouthrinses on discoloration of CAD-CAM manufactured restorative materials

    Purpose: To investigate the in vitro effect of four different mouthrinses on discoloration of popular CAD-CAM blocks. Methods: 40 specimens were prepared and then were divided into five groups (n = 8) for each CAD-CAM block (Vitablocks Mark II, IPS e-max CAD, GC LRF, Enamic, Cerasmart). In total, four different mouthrinses for each group (Listerine Zero, Parodontax, Kloroben, Oral B Pro-Expert) and distilled water for the control group were used. The specimens were immersed in 20 ml solution for 2 minutes, twice a day for 21 days with a 12-hour interval. Color changes were measured with a digital spectrophotometer (Vita Easyshade) after 7, 14 and 21 days and specimens were prepared. For statistical analysis, color changes (Delta E) were calculated and Kruskal Wallis and Wilcoxon tests were used. Results: There was not a significant difference in Delta E1 and Delta E2 values (P> 0.005) while there was a significant one in Delta E3 (P= 0.001) after Bonferroni correction for CAD-CAM materials were carried out as it is independent of the mouthrinse. Listerine Zero brought about the most noticeable color change in all CAD-CAM materials except e.Max after 21 days.
