Öğe Determination of the opinions of individuals aged 65 and over on aging in place: the case of Ankara(TAYLOR & FRANCIS INC, 2020) Cicek, Birgul; Sahin, Hande; Erkal, SibelThis study was planned to determine the opinions of individuals aged 65 years and older on "aging in place" and was conducted with 506 elderly individuals living in the cankaya district of Ankara. In order to determine the level of satisfaction of the elderly with the environment they live in, the "Aging in Place Scale," consisted of 15 items and three sub-dimensions, was used. In the study, the score received from the scale indicates the level of satisfaction of elderly individuals with the environment they have lived for a long time. In the study, the elderly were observed to receive scores well above the averages in all three sub-factors, and this situation demonstrated that their satisfaction levels were high. There was no statistically significant difference between the Aging in Place Scale and its sub-factors scores of the elderly and gender and housing ownership. A statistically significant difference was found between the "Attainable Social Support" sub-factor and the level of education and income, and Aging in Place Scale, "Perceived Social Support" and "Physical Competence" sub-factors with living situation. Furthermore, in the study, the relationship between marital status and Aging in Place Scale, its all sub-factors were also statistically significant. The obtained results were discussed within the framework of the studies in the literature, and suggestions were made to individuals, the related institutions and organizations for elderly individuals to age in place successfully.Öğe Factors affecting the risk of self neglect and loneliness level of the older adults: a case study from Turkey(Taylor & Francis Inc, 2024) Cicek, Birgul; Sahin, Hande; Erkal, SibelThe familial, physical, sociocultural, psychological, and economic changes experienced by older adults are known to scale up the risk of self-neglect and the level of loneliness. This study aims to determine the factors affecting the risk of self-neglect and loneliness levels of individuals aged 65 and over. The study group consists of 237 individuals living in Ankara and Kirikkale provinces of Turkey. Pearson Correlation Test was used to determine the relationship between the sub-dimensions of the scales and Linear Regression was used to determine the effect of independent variables on dependent variables. The results of the study revealed that the participating older adults had a low risk of self-neglect and an acceptable level of loneliness. A moderate positive correlation was found between the 'Elder Self-Neglect Scale (ESN)' and the 'Loneliness Scale for Elderly (LSE).' Furthermore, it was concluded that being middle-aged (74-84 years of age) and Social Network, Physical Health, Sanity (personal endangerment and mental health) sub-dimensions of Elder Self-Neglect Scale increased the loneliness level of individuals, whereas having four or more children in total was found to be a factor decreasing the level of loneliness. It was further concluded that Social Loneliness and Emotional Loneliness sub-dimensions increased the risk of self-neglect of the participants, while a total monthly income above 3001 TL decreased it. It is important to develop protective social policies for the elderly and to raise awareness of all segments of the society through training programs aiming to prevent self-neglect of the older adults and to reduce their loneliness levels.
