Öğe Heritability parameters for some body measurements in Turkish Arabian foals(Shiraz Univ, 2012) Cilek, S.The aim of the present study was to estimate genetic parameters of body measurements in Turkish Arabian foals. Records of wither height, front cannon circumference, heart girth, and body length were used for body measurements at birth, 6 months of age, 1-year-old and 2-year-old. Heritability of body measurements of Turkish Arabian foals was estimated by using records of foals sired by stallions which had at least 5 foals. Body measurement records at birth of 1597 foals sired by 40 stallions were used in heritability calculation of withers height, front cannon circumference, and heart girth. Heritability of all body measurements was estimated by paternal half-sib method. Estimated heritability ranged from 0.05 (heart girth) to 0.58 (wither height). Heritability estimates can be used to improve body measurements of Turkish Arabian horses. These results indicate that mass selection method based on the individual phenotype of the horses at different ages can provide genetic improvement in the herd. Phenotypic correlations between body measurements at consecutive age periods were all positive, ranging from 0.22 to 0.63. Thus, early body measurements of the Turkish Arabian foals can be used for prediction of the size of the adult horse.Öğe Investigation Of Leptin Gene Polymorphisms In East Anatolian Red Anatolian And Black Cattle And Determination Of Genetic Distance From Brown Swiss Cattle(Pakistan Agricultural Scientists Forum, 2011) Kaygisiz, A.; Bengi, C.; Cilek, S.The objective of the present investigation was to study single nukleotid changes genetic in leptin gene in indigenous (East Anatolian red Cattle and Anatolian Black) cattle breeds. The T and C allele frequencies were 0.54 +/- 0.06 and 0.46 +/- 0.06 for East Anatolian Red cattle, 0.48 +/- 0.05 and 0.52 +/- 0.05 for Anatolian Black respectively. All genotypes were distributed according to the Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium. Effect of leptin T allele polymorphism on the chest circumference was non-significant in East Anatolian Red breed. However, it was found significant in Anatolian Black breed (P<0.05). Statistical analysis results are showed that TT genotyped in Anatolian Black breed were higher than values of the other genotypes (CC and CT). These results indicate that the leptin TT genotype is associated with increased chest circumference. These observations may be economic interest. Genetic distances were determined according to Nei methods between the Brown Swiss (16) and East Anatolian Red Cattle (38) and Anatolian Black Cattle (45) breeds.
