Öğe Antibacterial and antifungal activity of Heracleum sphondylium subsp artvinense(Academic Journals, 2006) Ergene, Aysun; Güler, Perihan; Tan, Stewart; Mirici, Semra; Hamzaoğlu, Engin; Duran, AhmetEthanol and aqueous extract of Heracleum sphondylium subsp. artvinense was investigated for their antimicrobial activities against eight bacterial species (Enterococcus feacalis, Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Listeria monocytogenes, Shigella, Streptococcus pyogenes, and Corynobacterium diphtheria) and two yeast (Candida albicans and C. krusei). Both ethanol and aqueous extract of H. sphondylium subsp. artvinense showed antimicrobial activity against the gram-positive bacterium (S. aureus).Öğe Composition of the essential oils of Angelica sylvestris L. var. sylvestris isolated from the fruits by different isolation techniques(Allured Publ Corp, 2008) Ozek, Temel; Ozek, Gulmira; Baser, K. Huesnue Can; Duran, Ahmet; Sagiroglu, MehmetThe essential oils of the fruits of Angelica sylvestris L.var.sylvestris (Umbelliferae) obtained using hydrodistillation (HD), nucrodistillation (MD) and micro-steam distillation-solid-phase microextraction (MSD-SPME) techniques were analyzed by GC and GUMS. The composition of the oils depended on the isolation method employed. alpha-Pinene (25.6%,36.2% and 9.2%, respectively), beta-phellandrene (9.1%, 9.9% and 3.2%), bornyl acetate (7.3%,4.3% and 6.9%), limonene (5.6%, 4.3% and 2.1%). myrcene (4.4%, 4.0% and 1.3%), camphene (3.9%, 4.7% and 1.2%), alpha-chamigrene (3.4%,4.4% and 9.1%) and beta-sesquiphellandrene (2.5%,3.8% and 8.7%) were found as the main constituents in the oils. p-Cresol (6.5%), epi-alpha-bisabolol (5.6%), (Z)-beta-farnesene (5.5%), naphthalene (4.4%), daucene (3.1%), amorpha-4,11-diene (3.1%) and gamma-muurolene (2.5%) were also among the main constituents of the oil isolated by MSD-SPME.Öğe Isolation of DNA for RAPD analysis from dry leaf material of some Hesperis L. specimens(2003) Aras, Sümer; Duran, Ahmet; Yenilmez, GülayAn improved protocol for the isolation of DNA from dry material of some Hesperis specimens is described. The isolated DNA is suitable for random amplification of polymorphic DNA (RAPD) analysis. Different DNA extraction protocols were examined to determine which might yield DNA from dry leaf tissue of Hesperis specimens. The methods examined include the protocols with hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) described by Doyle and Doyle (1987); sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) by Dellaporta et al. (1983); and CTAB and SDS, the modified minipreparation, by Dellaporta et al (1983). None of these procedures yielded DNA of suitable purity for RAPD assay. We established an improved procedure involving CTAB and enzymatic digestion of proteins and RNA. The recovery of DNA with an average yield of 25 mg/g of leaf material was possible with this procedure. RAPD bands, which could be used to distinguish among Hesperis specimens, were generated.Öğe A new species of Scorzonera L. (Asteraceae) from Central Anatolia, Turkey(2002) Duran, AhmetA new species from Central Anatolia, Turkey, Scorzonera ekimii A. Duran (Asteraceae), is described and illustrated. Diagnostic morphological characters are discussed. In addition, its pollen characteristics and seed coat surface are examined. © 2002 Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.Öğe Psephellus turcicus sp nov (Asteraceae), a new chasmophyte species from central Anatolia, Turkey(Blackwell Publishing, 2005) Duran, Ahmet; Hamzaoğlu, ErginA new species, Psephellus turcicus A.Duran & Hamzaglu (Asteraceae) in sect. Psephelloidei (Boiss.) Wagenitz & Hellwig is described and illustrated from Anatolia, Turkey. The species grows on limestone crevices in Kazankaya Canyon (A5 Yozgat) in central Anatolia. A neo-endemic confined to Kazankaya Canyon, it is closely related to Psephellus psephelloides (Freny & Sint.) Wagenitz. Diagnostic morphological characters from closely similar taxa are discussed, and arranged in a key of Turkish similar Psephellus Cass. The ecology, biogeography and conservation status of the species are also presented. Achene surface morphology of R turcicus and R psephelloides are examined by SEM. The geographical distribution of the new species and other related species is mapped. MünevverSalvia anatolica Hamzaoglu & A. Duran sp. nova (Lamiaceae) is described and illustrated from East Anatolia, Turkey. It is closely related to S. bracteata, an endemic also confined to East Anatolia. Diagnostic morphological characters of S. anatolica from closely similar taxa are discussed.
