    Assessment of Undergraduate Dentistry Students’ Experiences and Self-Confidence Levels During Endodontic Treatment: A Cross-Sectional Survey Study

    Objective: The goal of this study is to compare experi ences and self-rated confidence levels between 4th and 5th year students across endodontic assignments. Material and Methods: A survey con sisting of 26 questions was organized at the termination of the academic year with the involvement of 4th and 5th year students studying at Kırıkkale University Faculty of Dentistry in accordance with the Princi ples of the Declaration of Helsinki. First 16 questions were about levels of confidence. Other questions prepared as multiple choices are about their experiences in endodontic procedures. The data obtained after col lecting the questionnaires were analyzed by using chi-square, Fisher’s exact and Mann-Whitney U tests at the 5% significance level. Results: One hundred and sixteen students (64 of 72 4th and 52 of 62 5th grade stu dents) answered the survey. The participation rate was 86.27%. The Grade-5 group felt statistically more confident about radiographic tech niques, determining the working length, mechanical instrumentation and filling of the root canals (p=0.030, p=0.001, p=0.011, p=0.020). Com paring mechanical instrumentation in maxillary and mandibular molars, the Grade-4 group felt statistically significantly confident in instrumen tation of the mandibular molars (p=0.000). The Grade-4 group felt sta tistically more confident in performing periapical radiographs of maxillary anterior teeth (p=0.000) and the Grade-5 group of mandibular molars (0.001). Additionally, students think that endodontics are more difficult than other dentistry departments (p=0.000). Conclusion: Within the limitation of this study, evaluating the major student difficulties dur ing endodontic treatment may improve teaching strategies throughout preclinical and clinical education.

    COLAGEN MICROANATOMY OF THE HUMAN SEPTUM CARTILAGE

    By operative observations and cadaver investigations we are describing the collagen microanatomy (tension lines) of the human septal cartilage. Resected parts of 15 patients septums crushed and the form of these materials were observed. Histologic examination was performed on 6 cadavers. Whole quadrangular cartilages excised; dorsal, caudal, basal and central portions sampled as in standart septorhinoplasty procedure, somewhat harvesting a cartilage graft. All were fixed and sliced in sagittal plane, longitudinally; stained with masson trichrome, examinated by a histologist under light microscope. Three of them were examinated by electron microscope but slices were transverse to the axis of cartilage strut or rod. Dorsum and columella posses a longitudinal direction of collagen organisation and strongly packed. Central and base portions have a more disorganised pattern and weaker. Base show collagen organisation perpendicular to palate. These data may be helpful for correction of problematic septum deformities. These lines may also be helpful in septoplasties and understanding the role of septum in maxillofacial development.

    Histological and magnetic resonance imaging alterations after irradiation of meniscus using holmium: YAG laser

    Objective: The authors performed an experimental and a prospective clinical study to evaluate the histological and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) alterations after irradiation of meniscus using holmium:YAG (Ho:YAG) laser VersaPulse Select 60 watts and InfraTome Delivery Systems 30 degrees Handpiece (spot size at fiber tip 0.4 mm; Coherent Medical, Palo Alto, CA). Background Data: Recently, some authors reported a few cases with articular cartilage damage or paraarticular osteonecrosis following arthroscopic knee surgery in which the laser was used to assist in the treatment of meniscal pathology. Methods: Meniscus specimens in saline immersion were exposed to Ho:YAG laser irradiation. The laser wavelength was 2.1 mum and pulse duration was 250 mu sec. Power settings were 1-1.5 joules per pulse and 10-15 Hz. Total laser energy used in these procedures was 2, 3.5, and 6 K joules. Eight patients with meniscal problems underwent arthroscopic partial meniscectomy using Ho:YAG laser. Total laser energy used for these surgeries was 1.5-2.5 K joules. MRI was performed preoperatively and at 6 months postoperatively. Results: At higher energy levels (more than 3 K joules), separation of the gap between the collagen fibers, and a three-dimensional dispersion in the striation were observed on electron microscopic evaluation of meniscus specimens. No patient had abnormal signals in MRI (a sign of articular cartilage damage or osteonecrosis) following arthroscopic laser surgery. Conclusion: When higher energy level is required, conventional instruments should be preferred in the treatment of meniscal lesions. Laser should be reserved for the posteriorly located and smaller meniscal lesions.
