    Changes in Children’s Play During COVID-19 Pandemic: Parents’ Views

    This study examines parents’ views on the changes in their children’s play at the beginning of the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) process. The study sample consists of 38 parents, twenty mothers, and eighteen fathers who reside in different city centers (Trabzon, Istanbul, Bursa, and Ankara) in Turkey and have children between three and six. The data were collected with “demographic information form” and “open-ended question form” created by the researchers. Data were collected online via ‘Google Forms.’ Descriptive statistics were used in the analysis of the data. As a result of the research, it was found that children’s play differs according to the type of play, play area, material type, and playing time with parents. The change in the type of play consisted of an increase in pretend play, an increase in educational plays, an increase in board games, an increase in plays involving art activities, a decrease in play behaviors that requires being physically active, an increase in building plays, and an increase in science and nature knowledge plays. The change in material type consisted of an increase in the use of technological tools. The change in the play area consisted of a decrease in outdoor play and an increase in indoor play. These results are discussed with the relevant literature. Change in playing time with parents consisted of increase in playing with mother and increase in playing with father. These results are discussed within the framework of the relevant literature.

    Post Pandemik Eğitim Sürecinde Okul Öncesi Öğretmenlerinin Aile Katılımına İlişkin Görüşlerinin İncelenmesi

    COVID-19 pandemisi tüm dünyada günlük yaşamı etkilediği gibi eğitimi-öğretim faaliyetlerini de oldukça fazla etkilemiştir. Tüm dünyada olduğu gibi Türkiye’de de salgının olumsuz etkilerini azaltmak adına okulların kapatılması ve uzaktan eğitim yapılmasını da içeren önlemler alınmıştır. Okul öncesi eğitimde aile katılım çalışmaları oldukça önemli bir faktördür ve eğitimin devamlılığı ve kalıcılığını etkilemektedir. Bu sebeple, içinde bulunduğumuz süreçte aile katılımın uygulamalarının ortaya konulması ve ihtiyaç durumlarına çözüm üretilmesi önemlidir. Okul öncesi öğretmenlerinin post pandemik eğitim sürecinde uyguladıkları aile katılım çalışmalarını incelemeyi amaçlayan bu çalışmada nitel araştırma yöntemlerinden özel durum çalışması kullanılmıştır. Çalışma Türkiye genelinde farklı illerde görev yapan 13 Okul Öncesi Öğretmeni ile yürütülmüştür. Okul öncesi öğretmenlerinin aile katılımı çalışmalarına ilişkin deneyimleri ve görüşlerinin incelenmesi için oluşturulan 17 soruluk açık uçlu anket ile veriler elde edilmiştir. Çalışma sonucunda okul öncesi öğretmenlerinin post pandemik süreçte gerçekleştirdikleri aile katılım çalışmalarının pandemi öncesi döneme göre farklılık gösterdiği ortaya çıkmıştır. Öğretmenler okulda yapılan etkinlikleri çeşitli iletişim kanalları ile ailelere bildirdiklerini ya da çocuklara evde aileleri ile yapabilecekleri etkinlik ve ödevler verdiklerini belirtmiş ancak bunun etkili bir aile katılımı açısından yeterli olmadığı belirlenmiştir. Pandemi ile mücadelede etkili birtakım yollar ve aşının bulunmasına rağmen öğretmenlerin ve ailelerin pandemi koşullarına uyulmasına yönelik beklenti içinde oldukları belirlenmiştir.

    Soft Corners and Sharp Edges: Exploring Inaccurate Geometric Shapes in Children's Picture Books

    Given the inaccuracy of children's picture books on shapes published in English, there was a need to analyse Turkish picture books on shapes. In order to carry out the study on the accuracy of Turkish picture books, a rating rubric for English picture books was translated into Turkish. The Traffic Light Rating Rubric rates books as red (explicit inaccuracies), yellow (implicit inaccuracies or missing concepts) and green (correct concepts). As a result of the research, it was found that the findings for the Turkish books were consistent with the previous findings for the English books. In the majority of the books analysed, the geometric shapes were rated as incorrect (red). Given the importance of early mathematical study for long-term success, the Traffic Light Rating Rubric-Turkish Version is intended to provide guidance to book selectors such as librarians, parents and teachers, and ultimately authors and publishers who need to produce texts with the correct form.
