Öğe Determination of the opinions of individuals aged 65 and over on aging in place: the case of Ankara(TAYLOR & FRANCIS INC, 2020) Cicek, Birgul; Sahin, Hande; Erkal, SibelThis study was planned to determine the opinions of individuals aged 65 years and older on "aging in place" and was conducted with 506 elderly individuals living in the cankaya district of Ankara. In order to determine the level of satisfaction of the elderly with the environment they live in, the "Aging in Place Scale," consisted of 15 items and three sub-dimensions, was used. In the study, the score received from the scale indicates the level of satisfaction of elderly individuals with the environment they have lived for a long time. In the study, the elderly were observed to receive scores well above the averages in all three sub-factors, and this situation demonstrated that their satisfaction levels were high. There was no statistically significant difference between the Aging in Place Scale and its sub-factors scores of the elderly and gender and housing ownership. A statistically significant difference was found between the "Attainable Social Support" sub-factor and the level of education and income, and Aging in Place Scale, "Perceived Social Support" and "Physical Competence" sub-factors with living situation. Furthermore, in the study, the relationship between marital status and Aging in Place Scale, its all sub-factors were also statistically significant. The obtained results were discussed within the framework of the studies in the literature, and suggestions were made to individuals, the related institutions and organizations for elderly individuals to age in place successfully.Öğe Determination Of University Student Attitudes Toward Violence(Sciencepark Sci, Organization & Counseling Ltd, 2017) Sahin, Hande; Erkal, SibelThis study aims to determine university student attitudes toward violence with respect to their individual characteristics. The sample group of the study comprised 353 students attending the Department of Child Development and the Department of Nursing at Kirikkale University Faculty of Health Sciences. In the study, the "Adolescents' Attitudes towards Violence Scale (ATVS)" served as the data collection tool. In data analysis, standard deviation, arithmetic mean, the Mann-Whitney U Test and the Kruskal-Wallis H Test were used. There was statistically significant difference in student attitudes towards violence with respect to age, gender and year at university (p<0.05).More research should be conducted to identify other factors associated with attitudes toward violence than age, gender and year at university.Öğe An Evaluation Of Abuse And Neglect In Elderly With The Hwalek-Sengstock Elder Abuse Screening Test(Gunes Kitabevi Ltd Sti, 2018) Sahin, Hande; Erkal, SibelIntroduction: The participants in this study, which was conducted to evaluate abuse and neglect in the elderly using the Hwalek-Sengstock Elder Abuse Screening Test, comprised older adults aged 65 and over, residing in Etimesgut, Ankara. Materials and Method: The study employed the Hwalek-Sengstock Elder Abuse Screening Test as the data collection instrument. In addition to standard deviation and arithmetic mean, the t-test was used for data comparisons between two groups, and analysis of variance was conducted when analyzing more than two groups. Results: The abuse and neglect status of the participants displayed significant differences with respect to educational attainment, monthly income, number of children, other household members, ownership of residence, and social security (p < 0.05). Conclusion: The elderly experience serious health problems because of physical, psychological, sexual, and economic violence and neglect.Öğe Factors affecting the risk of self neglect and loneliness level of the older adults: a case study from Turkey(Taylor & Francis Inc, 2024) Cicek, Birgul; Sahin, Hande; Erkal, SibelThe familial, physical, sociocultural, psychological, and economic changes experienced by older adults are known to scale up the risk of self-neglect and the level of loneliness. This study aims to determine the factors affecting the risk of self-neglect and loneliness levels of individuals aged 65 and over. The study group consists of 237 individuals living in Ankara and Kirikkale provinces of Turkey. Pearson Correlation Test was used to determine the relationship between the sub-dimensions of the scales and Linear Regression was used to determine the effect of independent variables on dependent variables. The results of the study revealed that the participating older adults had a low risk of self-neglect and an acceptable level of loneliness. A moderate positive correlation was found between the 'Elder Self-Neglect Scale (ESN)' and the 'Loneliness Scale for Elderly (LSE).' Furthermore, it was concluded that being middle-aged (74-84 years of age) and Social Network, Physical Health, Sanity (personal endangerment and mental health) sub-dimensions of Elder Self-Neglect Scale increased the loneliness level of individuals, whereas having four or more children in total was found to be a factor decreasing the level of loneliness. It was further concluded that Social Loneliness and Emotional Loneliness sub-dimensions increased the risk of self-neglect of the participants, while a total monthly income above 3001 TL decreased it. It is important to develop protective social policies for the elderly and to raise awareness of all segments of the society through training programs aiming to prevent self-neglect of the older adults and to reduce their loneliness levels.Öğe An Investigation of University Students' Attitudes Toward Environmental Sustainability(European Center Sustainable Development, 2017) Sahin, Hande; Erkal, SibelThe adoption of pro-environmental behavior is critical to reduce negative environmental impacts and move toward a more sustainable future. The role of higher education in training professionals to protect the environment for the future is important. The aim of the study was to investigate university students' attitudes toward environmental sustainability. In this descriptive study, 212 students studying child development and social work at the Faculty of Health Sciences at Kirikkale University completed a questionnaire on demographic characteristics and the sustainable environmental attitude scale. Descriptive statistics (e.g., frequency and percentage distribution, arithmetic mean, standard deviation, etc.) and t-tests and an analysis of variance were employed to analyze the differences between groups. The mean for university students' attitudes toward environmental sustainability was (x) over bar +/- SD = 3.28 +/- 0.26. The results revealed that the students studying child development ((x) over bar +/- SD = 3.31 +/- 0.23) were more environmentally conscious than those studying social work ((x) over bar +/- SD = 3.2 +/- 0.30) and that knowledge and the level of awareness affected environmental consciousness. It appears that the greatest challenges faced are the rapid changes in knowledge about environmental issues. These changes need to be included in the curricula of universities.Öğe Turkish adaptation of the Ideal Grandparent Scale(Wiley, 2022) Cakmak, Aygen; Sakarya, Seda; Sahin, HandePurpose This study tests the validity and reliability of the Ideal Grandparent Scale (IGS; Mansson, 2015) on university students. Design and Methods The Turkish version of the IGS was administered to 247 students at a university in Turkey to determine its validity and reliability. The students' mean age was 21.19 years (standard deviation = 1.69), with a range of 18-25 years. Findings The results showed a single factored construct with factor loads ranging from 0.748 to 0.917 and explaining 71.67% of the variance. The Cronbach's alpha coefficient of 0.96 indicated that the internal consistency of the scale items was high. Practical Implications The Turkish version of the IGS is valid and reliable for use in potential studies to be conducted in Turkey.
