Colonization, translocation and antibody response in experimental Campylobacter infection of chickens
(Scientific Technical Research Council Turkey, 2002) Yardimci, H.; Erdeger, J.; Akan, M.; Yildirim, M.
In this study we examined factors affecting the colonization of campylobacters in chick intestines, colonization times and elicited immune responses. In chicks, infected orally by minimal infective dose (100) (MID100), colonization in the intestines was observed to reach 100% during the 3-week period following C. jejuni and C. coli inoculation. When the SDS-PAGE protein profiles of the inoculated and isolated strains were examined similarities of 98.3% among C. jejuni strains and 98.5% among C. coli strains were determined. The results obtained from the ELISA tests performed with blood sera in the group infected with C. jejuni and in the control group for the 2nd, 3rd and 4th weeks were 0.27-0.25, 0.22-0.18 and 0.27-0.17, and the group infected with C. coli and the control group were 0.28-0.25, 0.24-0.19 and 0.32-0.18. After the immunoblotting analyses, specific bands that have molecular masses of 61, 47.5, 29.8 and 25.6 kDa were identified from C. jejuni strains and 62.5, 48 ve 31 kDa from C. coli strains, respectively.

Comparison of disc diffusion and E test® for in vitro antimicrobial susceptibility testing of Campylobacter jejuni and Campylobacter coli isolated from poultry
    (2005) Yildirim, M.; Ersin, I.; Burcu, A.; Nilgun, U.
The correlation between disc diffusion and E test® for in vitro antimicrobial susceptibility of Campylobacter jejuni and Campylobacter coli was evaluated using a quality control strain C. jejuni NCTC 11168 and 60 C. jejuni and 25 C. coli isolates recovered from poultry (chicken and turkey) faeces. Four antimicrobial agents ; ciprofloxacin, enrofloxacin, erythromycin and tetracyclin were tested using the two methods. The correlation between the E test, and disc diffusion varied greatly depending on the antimicrobial agents tested. The percentages of true results and 95% CI for disc diffusion for resistant strains were 75.3 % for ciprofloxacin, 25.9 % for enrofloxacin, 21.2 % for erythromycin and 14.1 % for tetracycline. Based on the E test® MICs, the resistant rate of the 85 Campylobacter isolates was highest for ciprofloxacin (78.8 %), followed by enrofloxacin (49.4%), erythromycin (21.2 %) and tetracycline (12.9%). Overall, our results suggest that disc diffusion is a reliable, easy and inexpensive susceptibility testing method for C. jejuni and C. coli for enrofloxacin, ciprofloxacin, erythromycin and tetracycline. The study indicated that the E test® results were reliable but it has been proven to be satisfactory testing method, its use for Campylobacter susceptibility testing requires further standardization. The resistance to four antibiotics for Campylobacter isolates in our study needs to be confirmed using the agar dilution or broth dilution methods. Therefore, surveillance programmes on antimicrobial-resistant clinical zoonotic pathogens in veterinary medicine in Turkey are needed.

Comparison of microlaparoscopy and conventional laparoscopy for tubal sterilization under local anesthesia with mild sedation
(Journal Amer Assoc Gynecologic Laparoscopists, 2001) Tiras, MB; Gökçe, O.; Noyan, V.; Zeyneloglu, H.B.; Güner, H.; Yildirim, M.; Risquez, F.
Study Objective. To compare tubal sterilization performed by microlaparoscopy and conventional laparoscopy. Design. Prospective, randomized trial (Canadian Task Force classification 1). Setting. Gazi University School of Medicine. Patients. Twenty women undergoing surgical sterilization. Intervention. Ten sterilizations by conventional laparoscopy and 10 by microlaparoscopy. Measurements and Main Results. The techniques were comparable in quality of visualization, operating time, amount of drugs used for sedation and local anesthesia, and intraoperative pain scores. However, the postoperative analgesic requirement was significantly less in women treated by by microlaparoscopy. Conclusion. Tubal sterilization by microlaparoscopy does not differ greatly from conventional laparoscopic sterilization.

Effects of a monthly injectable steroidal contraceptive, Mesigyna, on menstrual pattern, lipoproteins, and coagulation parameters
    (Elsevier Science Inc, 2001) Tiras, M.B.; Noyan, V.; Fener, N.; Guner, H.; Yildirim, M.; Darney, P.D.
The objective of this study was to determine the effects of a once-monthly injectable contraceptive (Mesigyna) on menstrual pattern, lipoproteins, and coagulation parameters. Thirty-six women aged 18-35 years requesting monthly injectable contraception were included. Before injecting estradiol valerate 5 mg and norethisterone enanthate 50 mg, coagulation, lipoprotein, and liver function parameters were determined. After the 3- and 6-month injections, the same coagulation and serum lipid measurements and liver function tests were repeated, and women were questioned about their menstrual patterns and side effects. Thirty women who completed 6 months were evaluated. At the end of 3 months, two-thirds of the 30 women had normal menstrual patterns; at the end of 6 months, 80% of the women had normal menses. Serum LDL, total cholesterol, and triglyceride levels did not change significantly, while HDL and VLDL decreased significantly (p = 0.032 and p = 0.039, respectively) at 6 months. PT and aPTT measures did not change at the end of 6 months, while fibrinogen levels were significantly lower (p = 0.013). Serum total bilirubin levels increased (p = 0.022) and albumin levels decreased (p = 0.022) at the end of 6 months. Mesigyna was well tolerated and side effects and menstrual abnormalities were acceptable. There were no clinically significant changes in lipoprotein, coagulation, or hepatic parameters. Ovarian wedge resection by minilaparatomy in infertile patients with polycystic ovarian syndrome: a new technique
(Elsevier Sci Ireland Ltd, 2003) Yildirim, M.; Noyan, V.; Tiras, M.B.; Yildiz, A.; Guner, H.
Objective: To determine the effects of ovarian wedge resection by minilaparotomy in infertile patients with polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS). Study design: One hundred and thirty-four anovulatory patients with PCOS, who were previously treated with clomiphene citrate and gonadotropins and did not concieve were operated via minilaparotomy with microsurgical principles and ovarian wedge resection was performed on each subject. Pregnancy rates and adhesion formation were investigated retrospectively. Results: A total of 121 pregnancies were achieved in 2 years (90%). One hundred and four patients concieved within the first 6 months (78%) and the remaining 17 patients concieved within 2 years (13%) following the operation. Sixty-eight patients had a second pregnancy later. In the post-operative period, 24 patients had cesarean delivery and 20 had diagnostic laparoscopy. Out of these 44 patients, only 5 of them were found to have minimal adhesions. Conclusion: This technique offers high pregnancy rates and minimal adhesion formation. Ovarian wedge resection by minilaparotomy might be an alternative treatment approach in patients with PCOS who did not concieve with standart ovulation induction protocols. Prevalence of Clinical Dermatophytosis and Oxidative Stress in Cattle
    (Medwell Online, 2010) Yildirim, M.; Cinar, M.; Ocal, N.; Yagci, B. B.; Askar, S.
In this study, skin scrapings and hair samples were collected from 50 cattle with clinically suspected of dermatophytosis in the province of Kirikkale, Turkey. Moreover, blood samples were collected from 10 clinically healthy cattle and 37 cattle with clinically suspected of dermatophytosis to investigate the influence of dermatophytosis on some biochemical profiles, lipid peroxidation and antioxidant system. The collected samples were directly examined for fungal elements by direct microscopy. The isolation was made from clinically diagnosed about 50 cattles belonging to Dermatophytosis by 22 (44%). The distribution of isolates was Trichophyton verrucosum 19/50 (38%), Trichophyton mentagrophytes 3/50 (6%), respectively. The influence of dermatophytosis on plasma Malondialdehyde (MDA), total protein, albumin, uric acid levels, vitamin A and beta-carotene, vitamin C levels on serum Cu, Zn and Fe elements, in the erythrocyte Catalase (CAT) and Superoxide Dismutase (SOD) enzyme activity was investigated. There was no significant difference between the control and dermatophitic groups for total protein, albumin, vitamin A and C values. However, plasma MDA, erytrocyte CAT (p<0.05) levels and SOD (p<0.01) enzyme activity and plasma beta-carotene, uric acid and serum Zn, Cu (p<0.05), Fe (p<0.01) levels in dermatophitic cattles were statistically lower than those of control group. The result of the study revealed that cattle dermatophytosis is highly prevalent in the Central of Anatolia, Kirikkale province. In addition, the effects of lipid peroxidation and antioxidant system have been determined during the pathogenesis of disease.
