    Helminth infections in tench (Tinca tinca) from Kapulukaya Dam Lake

    This study was conducted to determine helminth infections in tench (Tinca tinca), caught in Kapulukaya dam lake. The tench were transferred to the laboratory alive or recently dead. Thereafter, they were necropsied. Postmortem examination of the fish revealed that 84% were positive for various helminth species. Asymphylodora tincae (97.6%), Pomphorhynchus laevis (26.1%), metacercariae (15.4%), plerocercoids of Ligula sp. (5.9%) and nematode larvae (2.2%) were detected in infected fish. A. tincae was found in the intestine, P. laevis was found both in the intestine and in the abdominal cavity, plerocercoids of Ligula sp. were found only in the abdominal cavity, while nematode larvae and metacercariae were found on the skin and gills.

    Immunohistochemical localisation of 3β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase in Sarcocystis spp.

    3beta-Hydroxysteroid-dehydrogenase (3beta-HSD) is an isoenzyme that catalyses an essential step in the synthesis of all classes of active steroid hormones. The presence of steroid hormones of the vertebrate type in invertebrates is acknowledged in addition to a group of steroid-like hormones called ecdysteroids that were present in arthropods and helminths. In the present study, 3beta-HSD was detected in the bradyzoites enclosed in sarcocysts of Sarcocystis spp. with immunohistochemistry. The results suggest that self-originating steroid hormones may play important roles in the development of Sarcocystis spp., and possibly in the regulation of the reciprocal immune interaction between the host and these parasites.

    Massive cystic tetrathyridiosis in a dog

    This report describes a case of massive cystic tetrathyridiosis in a four-year-old female dobermann. The larvae were distributed in both the peritoneal and pleural cavities, as well as in the lumen of the small intestine along with adult Mesocestoides species. These parasites were identified as tetrathyridia. Numerous cysts were dispersed on the peritoneal, pleural and mesenteric surfaces. The same cysts were seen both on subcapsular surfaces and within sections of the spleen, liver, kidneys and lungs. Histopathological examination also revealed characteristics of tetrathyridium of Mesocestoides species.

    Pathological changes of tench intestines infected with Pomphorhynchus laevis

    In the present study, the pathological changes of intestines from tench (Tinea tinca), naturally infected with Pomphorhynchus laevis, were investigated. The parasites were found both in host's alimentary canal and extraintestinal position. R laevis were found between I and 15 infected fish. On histological examination, it was noticed that all layers of the host intestine were disrupted at the attachment site of acanthocephalan. The response of tench at the attachment site of P. laevis was thickening of lamina propria and cellular infiltration. Although extension of the fibroblasts around R laevis penetration was observed, it was not completely capsule formation.

    Prevalence of hydatidosis and fertility of hydatid cysts in sheep in Kirikkale, Turkey

    This study was conducted in order to determine the prevalence and fertility of hydatid cysts in sheep in Kirikkale, Turkey. A total of 3.2% of 553 lambs and 50.9% of 1320 adults were found to be infected with hydatid cysts. The most common locations of cysts were in the liver and lung. Liver cysts tended to be more fertile than lung cysts (81.53% v. 76.47%), though the difference was not significant. The mean number of viable protoscoleces in the liver and lung cysts were 12,400 and 5,800, respectively. In general, 1-10 cysts were found in liver (51.8%) and lung (64.7%). The findings of this study indicate that hydatid cysts are common in sheep and the fertility rate of cysts is quite high. Sheep play an important role in the life cycle of Echinococcus granulosus in this region.

    A scanning electron microscope examination of Heligmosomum costellatum

    The morphology of Heligmosomum costellatum, a nematode of field mice (Microtus epiraticus), was described by scanning electron microscope. The scanning electron microscopic view of this nematode revealed that the anterior end was surrounded by 2 cephalic vesicles. The 2 copulatory spicules of the male were enveloped in membrane and the male bursa was large. The female posterior end was characterized by a caudal spine. The body of this parasite had transverse ridges.

    A scanning electron microscope examination of Pomphorhynchus laevis

    Pomphorhynchus laevis is an acanthocephala which lives in the intestines of fish. These acanthocephala are characterised by a cylindrical proboscis, and an extremely long neck with a bulbous anterior expansion. In this study, the surface structures of P. laevis were examined with a scanning electron microscope. On the proboscis of this parasite 18 hook rows, each consisting of 12 hooks, were observed. The anterior hooks were smaller than the posterior hooks of the proboscis. The recurved hooks were within pockets on the proboscis. The presoma structure was porous and there were no pores on the hooks. The metasoma structure was also porous. Numerous cuticular wrinkles were observed on the metasoma.
