Neuropsychological evaluation of the hydrocephalic children: review of the literature
(Cumhuriyet Univ Tip Fak Psikiyatri Anabilim Dali, 2010) Bakar, Emel Erdogan; Taner, Yasemen Isik; Bakar, Buelent
Hydorcephalus is neurological and neurophsychological syndrom which is secondary to overloading of the cerebrospinal fluid which makes to enlarge cerebral ventricles. Therefore neurological smptoms usually could be seen together with some neuropyschological difficulties in motor, visual motor, visual perceptual, attention, verbal, and executive functions. These difficulties could negatively effect to the academical and socio-cultural skills of the patients, and will spread out their whole lifetime. So, cognitive deteriorations of these patients should be diagnosed properly; and appropriate treatment and rehabilitation programs should be applied early. Basic aim of this study is to define the cognitive difficulties of the hydrocephalic children. (Anatolian Journal of Psychiatry 2010; 11:68-75)

Jugular Foramen Meningiomas: Review of the Major Surgical Series
(Japan Neurosurgical Soc, 2010) Bakar, Bulent
Primary jugular foramen meningiomas are uncommon, with 96 previous cases published between 1992 and 2007. Exact location and extent of tumor were determined on the basis of radiologic and operative findings and used to develop a staging system. The mean age of patients was 39.4 years. The lesion was located on the right in 14 patients and on the left in 11 patients. The series identified 23 males and 58 females. The most common presenting clinical symptoms were hearing loss and tinnitus. Most clinical findings were middle ear mass and neck mass. Most meningiomas were World Health Organization grade L The most common postoperative complications were lower cranial nerve paresis and facial nerve paresis. Surgical planning should consider that meningiomas usually invade the dura mater, cranial nerves, and surrounding bone. The surgeon should carefully collect detailed data about the tumor, and consult an otolaryngologist preoperatively for lower cranial nerve functions and hearing levels.

Pitfalls in the management of Cushing's disease
    (Churchill Livingstone, 2007) Bademci, Gülşah
Cushing's disease is caused by functional corticotroph adenomas of the pituitary gland, most commonly noninvasive microadenomas. Transsphenoidal microsurgery is an effective means of control for patients with adrenocorticotrophic hormone-producing microadenomas. However, a wide variation of clinical outcomes and recurrence rates has been reported. The major causes of surgical failure in the treatment of Cushing's disease lies in inadequate preoperative evaluation, unsuccessful identification of the adenoma and inexperience of the surgeon. Furthermore, appropriate use of combination therapy, including surgery, radiotherapy, radiosurgery and adrenalectomy can improve the outcome. For optimal results in this rare disease, endocrinological, radiological and surgical procedures should be co-ordinated in a specialized center. In this review, factors affecting preoperative evaluation, surgical success and outcome are outlined in the light of current knowledge. (C) 2006 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
