The Importance of Morphological Knowledge in the Reading Comprehension Difficulties in a Highly Agglutinative Language: Evidence from Poor Comprehenders
(Springer/Plenum Publishers, 2023) Kargın, Tevhide; Güldenoğlu, Birkan; Gengeç, Hilal; Toker, Merih
This study examined the importance of morphological knowledge in the reading comprehension difficulties of poor comprehenders reading in a highly agglutinative language, Turkish. Participants were 56 students recruited from the second and third grades. In the assessment process, we applied three experimental paradigms addressing the participants' morphological and morpho-syntactical knowledge at the lexical and the supralexical levels. Data were collected in individual sessions and analyzed by running a series of GLM ANOVAs and calculating the Spearman-Brown correlation coefficient. Findings suggest morphological knowledge is an important indicator of reading comprehension difficulties in Turkish, a highly agglutinative language. The acquisition of adequate reading comprehension seems to be modified by particularities of the morphological knowledge.

Binocular coordination of children with dyslexia and typically developing children in linguistic and non-linguistic tasks: evidence from eye movements
(Springer, 2022) Temeltürk, Rahime Duygu; Özer, Esmehan
Given the increased evidence suggesting the presence of binocular coordination deficits in dyslexia, investigations of binocular eye movements are beneficial to clarify the underlying causes of reading difficulties. This systematic review aims to (a) synthesize the literature through the examination of binocular coordination in children with dyslexia by describing the normative development of stable binocular control and (b) outline future directions. Boolean expressions in the PubMed search were used to define papers. Following a literature search and selection process, 25 papers were included. Studies using binocular eye tracking during linguistic and nonlinguistic tasks in children with dyslexia and typical development 5-17 years of age are reviewed. The studies reviewed provided consistent evidence of poor binocular coordination in children with dyslexia, but the results associated with different task characteristics were less consistent. The relation between binocular coordination deficits and reading difficulties needs to be further elucidated in longitudinal studies which may provide future treatments targeting the binocular viewing system in dyslexia.

COVID-19 Outbreak From The Perspective of Students With Specific Learning Disabilities, Their Families and Teachers
(Cukurova Univ, 2022) Görgün, Bora; Balıkçı, Özge Sultan; Öğülmüş, Kürşat; Melekoğlu, Macid Ayhan
The aim of this study was to identify the problems and needs of students with specific learning disabilities, their families and teachers during the COVID-19 outbreak. In this direction, the study was carried out with phenomenological design, which is one of the qualitative research methods, and the data were analyzed with the content analysis method. Focus group interviews were carried out with six students with specific learning disabilities, who live in the three largest provinces of Turkey, five families and eight special education teachers working with students with specific learning disabilities. The students stated that it was very nice to be at home, but the lessons were lengthy and the brakes were short. Families stated that it was very enjoyable to spend time together at the beginning of the epidemic, but over time, sleeping, motivation and adaptation problems emerged for students and their children could not benefit from distance education. Special education teachers stated that they see distance education as difficult and wearing, they are not ready for distance education and as a society,we need innovations to turn this process into an opportunity. As a result of the study, it was concluded that teachers and families need support in the use of technological tools in the distance education, in the realization of educational adaptations for students remotely, and that students and families need psychological support systems.

Evaluation of Teachers's Early Literacy Proficiency and In-Class Literacy Practices Based on Child Outputs
(Cukurova Univ, 2022) Gengeç, Hilal; Güldenoğlu, Birkan; Kargın, Tevhide
This study primarily aims to evaluate preschool teachers' early literacy proficiency and in-class literacy practices based on child outputs. The study comprises 29 preschool teachers working in Gaziantep and 235 students continuing their education in these teachers' classes. The 'Teacher Interview Form' was used in the study to collect information regarding teachers' early literacy proficiency and in-class literacy practices, while the 'Early Literacy Test (EROT)' was used to assess children's early literacy skills. All of the teacher interviews and EROT applications were conducted individually in a designated room or classroom at their own school. The data obtained from the study were calculated and analyzed by the Mann-Whitney U test and Kruskal Wallis H test. The findings revealed that there was no significant difference between the teacher's early literacy proficiency and the children's early literacy subtest scores, that there was a significant difference between the in-class literacy practices and children's receptive and expressive language vocabulary subtest scores, and there was no significant difference between the children's phonological awareness subtest scores and listening comprehension skills.

Schoolwide Positive Behavioral Interventions and Support Practices: Review of Studies in the Journal of Positive Behavior Interventions*
    (2016) Öğülmüş, Kürşat; Vuran, Sezgin
Schoolwide Positive Behavioral Interventions and Support (SWPBIS) focuses on interventions in order to meet the social behavioral demands of schools with the help of a three-tiered model. The main aim in SWPBIS is to ensure behavioral success and academic achievement of students in schools. By analyzing the related studies it was seen that there are many studies focusing on the effectiveness of SWPBIS practices in schools and there is an ascending trend in the application of SWPBIS in schools. As a result, this study was conducted to review the experimental and quasi-experimental studies related to the SWPBIS published in the Journal of Positive Behavior Interventions (JPBI) between 1999 and 2015. The studies were examined in depth by using epistemological document analysis in 6 categorical areas: (a) purpose, (b) participants, (c) dependent variables, (d) method, (e) limitations, and (f) recommendations. Findings are discussed in accordance with the relevant literature. Finally, new proposals were made for new research and applicability in other countries.
