Özet
Bu çalışmada Orhan Pamuk'un "Benim Adım Kırmızı" romanındaki "kültüre özgü ögeler"in İngilizce ve Fransızca çevirileri "kültürel eşdeğerlik" kapsamında karşılaştırılmaktadır. Bu bağlamda tarihsel süreç içinde gelişen çeviri ve eşdeğerlik anlayışları örneklerle ayrıntılandırılarak çevirinin 20. yüzyılda bağımsız bir bilim dalı olarak kabul edilmesi ve günümüzde çeviri ediminin bir kültür aktarımı işi olarak değerlendirilmesi süreçleri üzerinde durulmaktadır. Ayrıca çeviri, kültür ve dil ilişkisine de değinildikten sonra, kültüre özgü öge kavramı açıklanarak bu kavramla ilgili çeşitli kuramcıların öne sürdükleri sınıflandırmalara ve bu ögelerin kültürel eşdeğerlik bağlamında aktarımını sağlamak için kullanılabilecek çeviri stratejilerine yer verilmektedir. Bununla birlikte, çalışmamızın sınırlarını belirlemek amacıyla, çeşitli araştırmacılar tarafından önerilen kültüre özgü öge sınıflandırmaları eklektik bir yaklaşımla değerlendirilerek çevirileri incelenecek 8 farklı kültüre özgü öge kategorisi ve 84 kültüre özgü öge belirlenmiştir. Tespit edilen kültüre özgü ifadelerin İngilizce ve Fransızca çevirileri Vinay ve Darbelnet'in çeviri stratejileri ile Nida'nın eşdeğerlik anlayışları kapsamında karşılaştırılarak kültürel eşdeğerlik açısından incelenmektedir. Yapılan bu çalışma, dinamik bir unsur olan kültüre özgü ögelerin farklı dillere çevirilerindeki zorlukları ve bu zorlukları aşmak için tercih edilen çeviri stratejilerinin anlam aktarımındaki rolünü ortaya koymayı amaçlamaktadır. Yaptığımız karşılaştırmalar, çevirmenlerin kültüre özgü ögelerin çevirilerinde karşılaştıkları kültürel engelleri aşmak için farklı çeviri stratejilerine başvurduklarını göstermektedir. Bu durum kültüre özgü ögelerin aktarımında kullanılan stratejilerin kaynak-erek dilin yapısına, kaynak-erek kültürün şartlarına ve çevirmenin tutumuna bağlı olarak değişmekte olduğunu ortaya koymaktadır. In this study, culture-specific items in French and English translations of Orhan Pamuk's "My Name is Red" are compared. To that end, the adventure of translation as a standalone branch of science and its acceptance as a culture transfer work is explained thoroughly. After mentioning the relationship between translation, culture and language, the concept of culture-specific item is also explained. Later, some classifications proposed by various theorists regarding this concept and translation strategies that can be used to transfer these elements in the context of cultural equivalence are detailed. These classifications in question have been treated with an eclectic approach to draw the scope of our study. In this regard, 8 culture-specific item categories and 84 cultre-specific items have been determined for the translation comparison. English and French translations of these culture-specific items are compared in terms of cultural equivalency through the translation strategies of Vinay and Darbelnet and Nida's understanding of equivalence. This study aims to reveal the difficulties in the translation of culture-specific items, which are a dynamic element, into different languages, and the role of translation strategies preferred to overcome these difficulties in rendering the meaning. Our comparisons show that translators use different translation strategies to overcome the cultural barriers in the translation of culture-specific items. This situation reveals that the strategies used in the transfer of culture-specific items vary depending on the structure of the source-target language, the conditions of the source-target culture and the attitude of the translator.
