Lung adenocarcinoma is one of the most fatal cancers in humans, and many factors are known to contribute to its poor prognosis. The aim of this work is to investigate the prognostic value of the apoptosis-regulating markers (caspase-3, bcl-2, p53) and the important detoxification enzyme (GST pi), and analyze the relationships among these immunohistochemical (IHC) results, patients' clinical characteristics, and survival. IHC stainings were performed on 89 lung adenocarcinoma specimens obtained from 89 patients from the Atatürk Chest Diseases and Thoracic Surgery Training and Research Hospital, Ankara, Turkey. The medical records of the patients were reviewed retrospectively. The correlation between the presence of protein expression and clinicopathological parameters (gender, age, tumor stage and histology) was examined by using the Pearson correlation test. Survival analysis was carried out by the Kaplan-Meier method. The prevalence of caspase 3, bcl-2, p53, and GST pi expression was 48%, 57%, 95% and 52%, respectively. The expression rate of p53 was relatively high in smokers than that in non-smokers. There were no correlations among the immunoreactivities of bcl- 2 and GST pi in clinical stage, and overall survival. However, there was a significant relationship between caspase-3 and p53 expressions and overall survival. Caspase-3 expression was correlated with good prognosis, and p53 expression was correlated with poor prognosis.en_US
