The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of 8-week functional strength training on spiking speed and biomotor abilities in young female volleyball athletes. A total of 30 female volleyball athletes from two different clubs, aged between 14-16, included in the study. Athletes divided into two groups (16 athletes in research group, 14 athletes in control group). 8-week functional strength training was applied in the research group in addition to their routine volleyball training. The control group continued their routine volleyball training. Spiking speed (standing and jumping spike) and service speed were measured by using radar gun device. Grip strength, leg strength, sit and reach flexibilty, shoulder flexibility, T-drill test, sprint test and jump tests (vertical jump and squat jump) were used to measure biomotor abilities. The measurements were repeated two times at baseline and 8-week later. ANOVA variance analysis was used to examine the effect of functional strength training on groups. At baseline, demographic characteristics, spiking speed and biomotor abilities were similar between groups (p>0.05). There was statistically significant effect of 8-week functional strength training on stabile spike speed, jumping spike speed, service speed, shoulder flexibility, grip strength, leg strength and vertical jump height (p<0.05). There was no effect on sprint test, T-drill test, sit and reach flexibility and squat jump test (p>0.05). In conclusion, it was observed that 8 weeks functional strength training increases the spiking speed and improves biomotor abilities in young female volleyball athletes.
