Longissimus dorsi muscle is an important muscle used in determining the value of sheep carcass. In this study, it was aimed to calculate the length, cross-sectional surface area and volume of the muscle in Kıvırcık sheep. The muscles of the right side of 10 Kıvırcık sheep were used in the study. Each muscle was fixed in 10% formol solution for 2 months. The length of each muscle was measured with a ruler, the weight with a digital scale and the volume values were measured by Archimedes method. 8-10 sections were obtained from the muscles that were cut in accordance with the systematic random sampling rule. The obtained sections were scanned at 600 dpi resolution in the standard office flapped scanner and digital images of the sectional surface areas were obtained. Cross-sectional surface areas were measured with the point counting grid within the grid function of ImageJ software and the volume of the muscles were estimated by Cavalieri methods. The length, weight and the sectional surface area of the muscle between 12-13. intercostal space of each muscle were found 21.94 ? 7.19 cm (Mean ? SD), 331.20 ? 38.38 gr (Mean ? SD), 13.50 ? 1.24 cm2. The volume values obtained using the Archimedes and Cavalieri's principle were 307.90 ? 29.46 cm3 (Mean ? SD), 185.62 ? 34.60 cm3 (Mean ? SD). A statistical difference was found between the volume data obtained by both methods (p <0.05). It is thought that the methods used in this study may be effective in eliminating unwanted conditions such as time-consuming applications, dependence on commercial software and user bias in the previous studies performed on longissimus dorsi muscle and the results of the study will be a reference especially for future morphometric studies.
