The aim of this research is to determine the success of 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th grade students in problems that require proportional and non-proportional reasoning, and the solution methods developed by the students to solve these problems. There search was carried out in a public school in the center of Kırıkkale in the 2019-2020 academic year. The study group consists of 312 students in total, consisting of primary and secondary school students. The typical case sampling method, which is one of the purposive sampling methods, was used to determine the study group. The case study method, which is one of the qualitative research methods, was preferred in the data collection, data analysis and interpretation of the data. The data collection tools of the research are the Proportional Reasoning Test consisting of 7 problems and semi-structured interviews with 61 students. The data obtained within the scope of the research were analyzed with both frequency analysis and descriptive analysis. As a result of the research, it was seen that the success of the students in the proportional reasoning test increased according to the grade level, but it was not at a sufficient level. In addition, when evaluated on the basis of the problem, it was determined that the success order varied. It has been observed that students frequently use certain strategies, which are suitable and unsuitable for the solution, and these strategies can differ according to the grade levels. In line with the interview swith the students, the reasons for choosing the strategies they preferred were determined and their solutions were clarified. In addition, although it is not at a sufficient level, it was concluded that the students who did not learn the proportionality issue in formal education had proportional reasoning skills.
