Evaluation of experimental studies presented in national pediatric surgery congresses

dc.description.abstractAim: A retrospective study was performed to evaluate the experimental studies presented in National Pediatric Surgery Congresses. Materials and Methods: Experimental studies presented in National Pediatric Surgery Congresses for the last 10 years were evaluated for presentation years, presentation types (oral presentation, poster with discussion and poster) and the topics retrospectively. Congress presentations in the website of Turkish Associaition of Pediatric Surgeons were taken into consideration. Results: Total number of 342 (% 19.8) experimental studies from 1725 presentations were presented in National Congresses (n:10) between 1999-2008. Among these presentati-ons, 198 (% 57.9) of the them were oral presentations, 108 (% 31.6) of them were poster and 36 (% 10.5) of them were poster with discussions. In these congresses, 81 (% 23.7) gastrointestinal models, 76 (% 22.2) genitourinary models, 70 (% 20.5) ischemia-reperfusion models, 58 (% 16.9) neonatal models, 17 (% 4.9) hepatobiliary models, 16 (% 4.7) trauma and shock models, 13 (% 3.8) tissue culture models, 8 (% 2.4) burn models and 3 (% 0.9) experimental pneumoperitoneum models were presented. The most common performed studies were vesicoureteral reflux, neurogenic bladder (n:.41) and ischemia reperfusion models for testicular torsion (n:40). Eighty-two of these presentations were published in SCI/SCI-Expanded indexed journals. From published studies, 49 of them were oral presentations and 33 of them were posters. Conclusion: Experimental studies constitutean important part of national pediatric surgery congresses and with these studies, pediatric surgery clinics in our country have an important contribution to the international literature.
