The aim of this study is to determine the instant effect of kinesio taping applied to the rectus femoris muscle on rectus femoris muscle activation, physical performance and proprioception in patients with knee osteoarthritis. Forty individuals diagnosed with osteoarthritis were included in the study and were divided into two groups as intervention and placebo groups. Kinesio taping was applied to both rectus femoris of the participants for 30 minutes with the facilitation technique in the intervention group and without tension in the placebo group. Sociodemographic information of all patients was recorded.Superficial Myomonitor Wireless System device was used for muscle activationi goniometer for proprioception, the Timed Up and Go (TUG) Test and 5 times sit-to stand test for physical performance and the Western Ontario and McMaster Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC) for functional status. The mean age of the individuals was 55,93±5,44 years. EMG findings of the rectus femoris measured after removal of kinesio taping did not differ significantly for both groups compared to before taping (p>0,05). Individuals', 5 times sit-stand test, proprioceptive sense of both knees and WOMAC total score improved significantly for the intervention group compared to the placebo group (p<0,05). There was no significant difference between the two groups for the change in TUG, WOMAC pain and function sections (p>0,05). As a result of the study, it was concluded that kinesio taping did not momentarily affect the rectus femoris muscle activation in patients with knee osteoarthritis, but instantly improved physical performance and proprioception.
