Özet
Roma cumhuriyet dönemi siyasi ve sosyal yapısı, Batı medeniyetinin siyasi ve sosyal temellerinin oluşumunda büyük bir etkiye sahiptir. Marcus Tullius Cicero, Roma Cumhuriyeti' nin yıkılma sürecinde yaşamış, bununla birlikte fikri ve siyasi mücadelesi ile cumhuriyet kurumlarının yıkılmaması -ve hatta daha da güçlendirilmesi- için mücadele etmiş bir devlet adamı ve düşünürdür. Fakat Cicero'nun vermiş olduğu bu mücadele, Roma'da cumhuriyet rejiminin sürmesini ve bu mücadeleden dolayı kendisinin de öldürülmekten kurtulmasını sağlayamamıştır. Bir düşünür olarak Cicero, temelde bir aktarıcı ve derlemeci olarak eleştirilmiştir. Yinede onun Yunan felsefesini, eserleri vasıtasıyla Roma'ya tanıttığı bir gerçektir. ABSTRACT The social-political structure of the Roman Republic had profound influence on the creation of social and poltical foundations of Western civilization. Marcus Tullius Cicero is politican and thinker whose life coincided with the decline and fall of the republic. His political and philosophical activities aimed at the defense, and if possible the improvement, of the republican institutions. However, his struggle prevented neither the fall of the republic nor his execution. As a thinker, Cicero was criticized largely on the grounds that his philosophy is derivative and unoriginal. Nevertheless, it is undeniable that he made Greek philosophy accessible to a Roman audience through his works. His works were also widely read during the Medieval as well as Enlightment eras, and he was considered one of the grand philosophers of the ancient era. Given the influence of his works on Medieval and Enlightment thinking, he can be regarded as a thinker who made great contributions to Western political philosophy.
