In this study, the five-factor model of personality traits, emotional expressions, and social approval needs of university students were examined according to gender, the place where they spent most of their lives (village/town, district, and city center), and year of study variables. In addition, it was found that neuroticism, extroversion, openness to experience, conscientiousness, and agreeableness, which are sub-dimensions of the five-factor model of personality traits, were correlated with both emotional expression and the need for social approval. The research was conducted on 417 university students studying at various universities in Turkey.Independent samples t test, ANOVA, Kruskal-Wallis H test and partial correlation techniques were used in the analysis. Female university students obtained significant higher scores compared to male university students in terms of the neuroticism and agreeableness dimensions of the fivefactor model of personality traits. In emotional expression and all its sub-dimensions female university students obtained significant higher scores than male university students. In the positive impression subdimension of social approval need, female university students received significant higher scores than male university students. In the agreeableness dimension, university students who spent most of their lives in villages/towns obtained significant higher scores than those who lived in the district and city center. In the total score of social approval need and its subdimension of sensitivity to others' judgments, university students who spent most of their lives in the village/town obtained significant higher scores than those who lived in the city center. Another finding of the study was that extroversion and openness to experience, which are the sub-dimensions of the five-factor model of personality traits, were moderately correlated in a positive direction. Neuroticism was found to be negatively correlated with extroversion, agreeableness, and conscientiousness. Emotional expression was determined to be positively correlated with extroversion. Social approval need was found to be negatively associated with extroversion and openness to experience, and positively associated with agreeableness.
