68-English language teaching model proposal for Deaf and Hard of Hearing students

Özet

This study tries to explore English language learning conditions of Deaf and Hard of Hearing (DHH) students in Turkey and worldwide. To this end, descriptive research method was carried out to find out the characteristics of DHH English language learners and their ways of communicationand certain foreign language teaching methods and/or techniques recommended for this group of learners. Within the framework of these objectives, the study investigated English language learning conditions of DHH students in Turkey and worldwide through the literature review of both empirical and theoretical studies concerning DHH English learners. Briefly, the results of the research shows that there have been few studies on DHH English language learners in Turkey and DHH learners do not have access to appropriate English language teaching. Having examined the studies concerning DHH English language learners worldwide, there are some practical implications regarding their characteristics, communication ways/needs, and methods and techniques recommended for this group of learners. In brief, within the scope of the data derived from this study, the proposed model of teaching English to DHH learners basically in cludes components such as visualisation, using technological tools, teaching strategies of reading and vocabulary, constructing a multilingual learning environment by using national sign language, cued speech, lip reading etc., repetition, explicit teaching, and providing enriched feedback.
