Examination of Participation in Lifelong Learning in the Context of Non-Formal Education Courses

Özet
In the Turkish education system, which was organized in the form of formal and non-formal education with the Basic Law of National Education No. 1739, many non-formal education activities are organized in order to provide individuals who are out of formal education and cannot access education, on the basis of equality of opportunity, with the life skills required by the age. Especially in the rapidly changing information era of the 21st century, the need for rapidly changing knowledge and individuals who turn this knowledge into a skill has made it even more important to transform the education limited to a certain place, time and age through non-formal education into lifelong continuous education. In this direction, in parallel with the developments in the world, policies are being developed to increase non-formal education activities under the roof of lifelong learning and to maximize participation in related activities in Turkey. Within the framework of relevant policies and developments, in this study, it is aimed to examine the courses opened for non-formal education in terms of the number of courses and trainees and course type variables, and in this context, it is aimed to make suggestions for increasing participation in courses and therefore lifelong learning. In this study, document analysis, one of the qualitative research methods, was used and the data in the Lifelong Learning Monitoring and Evaluation Reports published between 2016-2020 were evaluated. As a result of the research, it has been determined that the number of non-formal education courses and trainees has increased, but the desired level of participation in lifelong learning has not been reached yet. In this direction, it is recommended to make non-formal education courses more flexible in terms of time, to open different courses for some age groups, to support the trainees financially (providing material support) and morally (psychological relaxation). © 2023
