dc.description.abstractWorld War II ended with the victory of the Allied Powers. The world in the aftermath of the war was divided into two antagonizing blocks. The Capitalist block was led by the USA whereas the Socialist block was under the leadership of the USSR. In the post-war period, both blocks established their respective political, economic and military organizations. In the post-war era the USSR threatened Turkey's territorial integrity and demanded 'military bases' to defend the Bosphorus together. Turkey rejected these demands. in march 1947 the USA took over Britain's traditional role of keeping the Russians out of the eastern Mediterranean. The American administrators supported and promised material aids to Turkey. The Turkish political elites adopted a vvestern oriented foreign policy, and consequently tried to integrate Turkey into these vvestern political, economic and especially military organizations. Turkish governments struggled to enter into NATO as a full member in the 1949-1952 period and They had been supported by the majority of Turkish nevvspaper in their effortsen_US
