Özet
In this study, the melting behaviour of phase changing materials is investigated since it is used as heat storage materials. For this purpose, body-pipe-type heat exchanger models with different pipe sequences are created. Hot water is assumed to flow from the inner pipes of heat exchangers while a paraffin wax filling as heat storage material is wrapped outside these pipes. Three main model geometries are determined for different geometric sequences of 4 pipes placed in the heat exchanger. For all these model geometries, the water inlet temperature is changed between 60 and 70 degrees C while the water flow rate is varied between 0.03 and 0.05 kg/s. Numerical simulations are conducted by using computational fluid dynamics for different inlet temperatures and different inlet flow rates. As a result of the analysis, velocity and temperature distributions are identified while melting amount and stored energy amount are investigated. Thus, the effects of pipe sequence, water inlet temperature, and inlet flow rate on paraffin melting behaviours are analysed. The findings indicated that the fluid inlet temperature increase as the vertical tube positioning near the ground decreased the melting duration of paraffin as well as increased the amount of stored energy. However, it was observed that the inlet flow change had no significant effect on the melting behaviour of paraffin. Therefore, the results refer that fluid inlet temperature, the position, and the sequence of the tubes, which fluid flows in a thermal energy storage system, are important parameters.
