Özet
1950'lerin son yıllarında iktidardaki DP ile muhalefetteki CHP arasındaki çekişme, Türkiye'de siyasal kargaşaya yol açtı. Türkiye'deki siyasal sistemin Batı yanlısı bir dış politikanın güvencesi olduğunu, CHP'nin de DP gibi özünde ABD ile işbirliğini desteklediğini anlayan ABD, kendini taraflardan biri ile özdeşleştirmekten sakındı. 27 Mayıs 1960 askeri müdahalesi sonrasında ise temel amaç Türkiye'nin tarafsızlık politikasını benimsemesinin önlenmesiydi. Bu dönemde ABD sivil yönetime dönüşü hararetle destekledi. Bu ise pratikte, CHP'nin iktidar olmasına dolaylı bir destek demekti.
The rivalry between the party in power (DP) and the opposition (RPP) in the late 1950's created political turmoil in' Turkey. Realizing that the political system of Turkey guaranteed her Western-oriented foreign policy and that the RPP -like the DP- was basically in favor of Turkish-American cooperation, the US avoided from identifying itself with either side. After the military intervention of May 27, 1960, the basic American aim was to prevent Turkey from leaning toward neutrality. In this period Washington firmly supported the return to civilian rule. In practice, this meant an indirect American support for RPP's coming to power.
