dc.description.abstract | In this study, Hegel's idea was aimed to be examined on a sociological base by revealing the relationship between social and political changes in the seventeenth and the eighteenth centuries in Europe and emerging philosophic ideas, and the reflection of this relationship at religious perception. In a process in which radical enlightenment shaped rationalism and the rise of modern science caused a prestige loss regarding traditional values (and religion), Hegel's idealist philosophy seems to fortify religion. Yet, his idealist dialectic method that presented religion as an historical fact and explained religions in historical grades prompted weak results in terms of the content and reality of religion. Hegel reduces religion to a cultural fact as one of the emerging forms of religion/reason/Geist. In this anthropological view, religion is finds itself a legal area in the culture of communities and nations. Religion, discussed as a means of political and social integration, has a dynamic structure that harmonizes social and political changes. This interpretation causes the establishment and creation of the sources of spiritual principles and symbols that are needed for a raising nationalist ideology in order to legitimate the interpreted form (Volkreligion) in the culture and geist of the religions, but not the specific religions such as Christianity and Islam. In Hegel's works, religious terms were used mostly with their synonyms. Thus, while some researchers find there an argument for religion, some others against religion. | |
