Challenges of Providing Nursing Care to Patients with Dementia: A Qualitative Study

Objective: The aim of this study was to identify the challenges faced by nurses while providing care to patients with dementia. Materials and Methods: This study was a descriptive and qualitative study conducted between 10 December 2017 and 1 March 2018. In-depth interviews were conducted with ten nurses. Data were analyzed using the inductive content analysis method. Results: Four themes and eight subthemes were identified. The themes were: the perception of dementia, the meaning attributed to caring for patients with dementia, challenges of nursing care in dementia, and empowerment in care practices. Conclusion: Nurses must understand the complex needs of people with dementia in hospitals and clinics. Because these patients need person-centered care that requires special communication and behavior. Nurses should be supported to provide this care to patients with dementia and manage the symptoms of patients with dementia. It contributes to providing individual and institutional support to nurses who care for patients with dementia, improving their communication skills, and coping with the difficulties and difficulties faced by nurses. © Copyright 2022 by the Academic Geriatrics Society / European Journal of Geriatrics and Gerontology published by Galenos Publishing House.
