Özet
In this study, the melting behavior and thermal performance of gallium as a phase changing material is investigated in a thermal energy storage system. For this purpose, a fundamental model geometry as an annular is determined. This model is assumed to have water flow on the inner pipe and phase changing material inside the gap between two pipes. Different new model geometries are created from this fundamental model by changing the cross-section geometry elliptic of the inner pipe. Within this scope, time-based analysis is conducted with Computational Fluid Dynamic for different model geometries and different water input temperature values. By using the data obtained from the analysis, the effects of natural convection and fluid input temperature on the melting behavior are investigated. As a result, it is found that the gallium melting duration decreased as the input temperature of thermal transfer increased. It is observed that melting speed increased and therefore, melting duration decreased as the ellipticity of the inner pipe cross-section geometry increased. The best thermal performance was obtained in Model-5 with the highest ellipticity. Compared to Model-5 and Model-2, melting times for 65 C-degrees, 70 C-degrees and 75 C-degrees were shortened by 34.06%, 33.92% and 30.91% respectively.
